Boston auction house selling Princess Diana belongings

Boston-based RR Auction is getting in on the action by selling a slew of items related to, as the auction house’s publicist puts it, “one of the most admired women in the world.” The cache includes clothing, jewelry, signed papers and photographs, and a piece of her wedding cake.

‘She still resonates all over the world,’’ RR Executive VP Bobby Livingston said in a statement.

In the unlikely event you’ve forgotten the tragic circumstances of her death on Aug. 31, 1997, Princess Di and her boyfriend at the time, Dodi Al Fayed, were passengers in a car that was being driven through Paris at a high rate of speed. Shortly after midnight, the car crashed, killing the driver and Dodi Al Fayed instantly. Diana succumbed to her injuries later at a hospital. She was 36.

Among the 79 items being sold by RR Auction is a silver necklace, featuring a charm in the shape of the letter “D,” studded with clear stones and suspended from a chain. (As a teen, Diana was photographed with just such a “D” necklace.) There’s also a satin-lined, silver-jeweled evening bag dating to the early ’80s, which is expected to sell for more than $15,000.

The oddest item by far is the piece of cake, which is encased in a special box commemorating Diana’s marriage to Charles, marked on the cover with ‘‘CD, Buckingham Palace, 29th July 1981.’’ And there’s Diana’s childhood copy of Beatrix Potter’s ‘‘The Tale of Pigling Bland,’’ signed by the author.

Online bidding ends Sept. 13.
